Data SGP

Data sgp is a system that utilizes longitudinal student data to produce statistical growth plots (SGP). A SGP describes a student’s current test score as a percentage of students with similar prior test scores (their academic peers). SGPs allow us to communicate a student’s growth in percentile terms that are familiar to teachers and parents. SGPs are based on the statistical analysis of a student’s long-term performance record and are intended to be more accurate than unadjusted test scores.

The most important aspect of a SGP is that it provides accurate, meaningful, and useful information about a student’s growth. A SGP indicates how much a student’s current test score improved over their entire academic history. It also shows how much a student’s current test scores improved over the average for their class. The SGP reflects a student’s growth in all subject areas, including reading, writing, math, science, and social studies.

SGPs can be calculated from a variety of sources, but the best source for an accurate and reliable SGP is an official assessment. An official assessment is one that has been administered by a state or national agency that meets certain quality assurance and security standards, including the use of certified test administrators and an approved test specification. Official assessments typically have a longer history than other tests, are administered to large groups of students, and are used by multiple schools.

An example of a sgp data set is sgpData, which contains 5 years of student assessment data in wide format. The first column, ID, provides the unique student identifier and the next five columns, GRADE_2013, GRADE_2014, GRADE_2015, GRADE_2016, and GRADE_2017, provide the grade level of each student’s assessment score in each of the 5 years of data. The final row, SCORE_2013, demonstrates the scale score that was assigned to each student during each of the 5 assessment occurrences in 2013.

While sgpData is an excellent example of a sgp data, the use of wide-format data with the SGP package is, in general, straight forward. For more comprehensive documentation on using sgpData and SGP, please refer to the SGP data analysis vignette.
