Singapore Prize and Temasek Trust As Founding Partners

In a statement, the NUS Singapore History Prize committee said it “acknowledges the vital role of non-fiction in developing a strong sense of shared history and identity for a nation.” The NUS History Prize will now include a biography category for the first time. The winning book will be a work of non-fiction with an emphasis on social history. A biography is a narrative that tells the life and times of an individual or group, usually in a biographical format. The competition is open to books published in 2024 and will be awarded to the best book in the Chinese, English, Malay or Tamil language.

The winner of the sgp prize will be announced on 30 April. The awards will be presented at a ceremony at the National Museum of Singapore. The award comes with a cash prize of S$10,000 and an honourary diploma.

Among the winners in other categories were Singapore author Akshita Nanda’s debut novel Nimita’s Place, about two women struggling with society’s expectations in India and Singapore; and the short story collection Lion City by Ng Yi-Sheng. Both novels are published by Epigram Books, which has been a co-publisher of the prize since its inception in 2014. The Singapore Literature Prize, an annual literary award for works of fiction and poetry, will remain as before. The top prize will go to a book in Chinese, English or Malay that is “of exceptional merit”.

Two Singaporean films won the best film awards at the Asian Film Academy Awards: Lou Ye’s docufiction drama An Unfinished Film, about a director trying to complete a decade-old project during the coronavirus pandemic, and Vietnamese filmmaker Truong Minh Quy’s Love and Separation, a gay romance between coal miners facing separation. Both films were distributed by SGIFF.
