Hongkong Prize 2024 Winners Revealed

Hongkong Prize is an annual competition that rewards students for their academic achievements and extracurricular activities, giving them the recognition they deserve. It offers cash prizes and access to Hong Kong research facilities. It also encourages students to learn about the city’s history and culture. This prize was established in 1996 by friends and students of Professor John D. Young, who wished to honour his passion for Hong Kong history and believe that an education should include a thorough understanding of local history.

Hong Kong Prize was created to attract world-class scientific talent to form a science and technology hub in the city, and to support forward-thinking scientists to explore innovative research ideas while building careers here in Hong Kong, serving our nation and contributing globally. This year, HKUST researchers in all fields of science and technology applied for the Prize, with applications for artificial intelligence, life and health, new materials and energy, advanced manufacturing and FinTech showing particular strength.

The winners of the 2024 Hong Kong Art Prize were revealed at a gala dinner at the Four Seasons Hotel on May 17. Pakistani artist Sameen Agha won the $30,000 Grand Prize for her sculptural work A Home is a Terrible Place to Love, while Singaporean artists Michelle Fung and Demet took home the Vogue Hong Kong Women’s Art Prize and Public Vote prizes respectively.

In addition to the top three awards, a special award was presented to a student who has demonstrated outstanding leadership in community service projects. This award was named after renowned Hong Kong philanthropists and business people the late Sir Victor Li and his wife, Lady Li. The Lishang Foundation is a charitable trust which aims to inspire young people to pursue their dreams and serve society.

Domestic racing prize money in Hong Kong will increase by 8% next season, featuring increases across all classes of competition. This will see a total of HK$1.38 billion on offer across the season, including bonuses.

Ronald Cheng has had a colourful career – from being arrested for putting a flight attendant in a headlock to becoming one of Hong Kong’s most beloved comedy stars. In addition to acting and singing, the father-of-two has founded a restaurant chain and post-production company. In an interview with CNN, he discusses the value of a quality education and why it is important to pay it forward. In short, he believes that “paying it forward is the most meaningful way to live”.
